The Daily Nosh – Exodus 1: 8-11a

(8) Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph. (9) He said to his people, “Look, the people of the sons of Israel are too numerous and powerful for us. (10) Come, we must deal shrewdly with them or else they will grow even more numerous, so that if war breaks out, they may join our enemies, fight against us and then escape from the land.”  (11a) So they set slave masters over them to afflict them with forced labor…

Nosh: However disquieting a notion it is, sometimes, only negative situations in our lives can prepare us to move out of our comfort zones in order to fulfill God’s purpose and plans for our lives. That surely was the case here. God used national enslavement to make Israel so uncomfortable with what previously had been a very prosperous existence in Egypt that they would at least be open to leave Egypt with Moses. No discomfort – no change.
