PASSOVER RECIPE: HAROSET

Haroset is a mixture of apples, nuts, cinnamon and wine.  It is supposed to resemble a paste; its purpose is to remind us of the mortar used in Egypt to put bricks together.  So – the quantities in this recipe are variable.  The only important thing is the texture.

  • 2 large apples, peeled and cored
  • ½ cup walnuts
  • ½ tsp. cinnamon
  • 2 tblsp. sweet red Passover wine
  • 1 tblsp. honey (optional)

Put all ingredients in a blender or food processor until smooth or almost smooth.  If mixture is too thick, add a little more wine.  If it’s too thin, add more walnuts.  Serves 10-12.
